If there is any real IP transfer involved at all, I suspect that it is Olympus Corp IP. There are more than 10 alternatives to Panolapse for a variety of platforms, including Mac, Windows, iPad, iPhone and Windows S. Panolapse uses 3D perspective correction to create real-world rotational panning through your scene. The likelihood seems to me that the deal is with Olympus Corp, not OMDS, and that OMDS would get no benefit at all, even licence fees. Panolapse is described as Add camera motion to your timelapse videos, deflicker, and combine JPG images into a video file. Again, it's possible that it is expertise Olympus Corp has for endoscopes, which have similar constraints to phones. Also, phone lenses are a completely different kettle of fish from large format camera lenses. Possibly Olympus uses sensor-shift IS in endoscopes. Or maybe it's just the IBIS control algorithms, in which case, it's interesting who owns that IP. Except that IBIS systems designed for Four Thirds sensors would hardly be usable in phones, since the sensors are much smaller and the space constraints completely different. The reports mention IBIS as a an Olympus technology that Samsung might take advantage of, but one would have though the expertise for that tech now lies on OMDS. It's hard to believe that OMDS has the rights to licence the Olympus brand. None of the reports distinguishes between Olympus and OMDS. ![]() In my experience this route often results in you getting an outdated version at best, or more often than not you’ll be downloading malware and infecting your computer. It's quite hard to make much sense of this, apart from Olympus Corp monetising the trade name. Panolapse is very fairly priced considering the amount of functionality so we strongly recommend just buying a license instead of trying to find a Panolapse torrent or crack. Mindshare is something Olympus has lacked for 40 years or so. The subtle conditioning for millions of Samsung Phone users, that Olympus is a reliable and worthy camera company to do business with could be valuable at upgrade time. What would OMDS get out of this besides a licensing fee? Olympus could offer printing and other internet services as well. I would suspect in most countries, those phone cameras would be considered Olympus Cameras from a legal POV. Say, access to Olympus Workspace, possibly ability to produce ORF files, possible access to an enhanced OIS, are all possibilities. I think access to the OMDS infrastructure would be useful to Samsung. On Mu-43, someone asked what does OMDS get out of this besides some licensing fees? What does Oly REALLY bring to the table?
